Essential things to know about Civil Service Exam

Every year Union Public Service Commission conducts Civil Services Examination to shortlist candidates for various services including All India Services (AIS), namely Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Forest Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS). Before starting the preparation for civil services examination one needs to get acquainted with the details of the exam.

PATTERN, SCHEME AND SYLLABUS OF THE EXAMINATION

The civil services examination comprises of three successive stages : Civil Services Preliminary Examination (Objecticve Type) ,Main Examination( Descriptive Type) and Personal Interview (Personality Test)

The civil services preliminary examination has two papers in General Studies under the revised scheme of examination each of 200 marks and of two hours duration. Each question carries two marks. While a correct answer gets a candidate two marks, an incorrect one means a loss of 0.66 marks. 

Paper II is only a qualifying paper and a minimum of 33% marks are required to be eligible for clearing the preliminary exam. The qualification to the main examination round is on the basis of one’s performance in Paper I.

The preliminary examination is only meant for screening a candidate for the subsequent stages of the exam. The marks obtained in the Prelims will not be added up while arriving at the final rank list.

Only those candidates who secure at least the declared cut off in General Studies I and 33% in General Studies II in Prelims will be allowed to appear for the Mains Examination.

The main examination consists of nine papers, two qualifying (language papers)  and seven ranking in nature. Each paper is of a duration of 3 hours.

Candidates who pass qualifying papers are ranked according to marks and a selected number of candidates are called for interview or a personality test at the Commission’s discretion.

The interview, is usually conducted by a panel of five or six members headed by a chairperson. It assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service by a board of competent and unbiased observers.
